David Serrano, actualmente es Director del Instituto IMDEA Energía y Catedrático de Ingeniería Química en la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. Asimismo, es Jefe de la Unidad de Procesos Termoquímicos en el Instituto IMDEA Energía.
Doctor por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1990) con Premio Extraordinario. Ha realizado estancias en el Instituto Tecnológico de California (CALTECH, 1991) y en la Universidad de California en Santa Bárbara (UCSB, 2006). Ha sido Profesor Titular en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1990-1999), trasladándose a continuación a la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. En esta última ha desempeñado diferentes cargos académicos: Coordinador del Área de Ciencias Ambientales (1999-2001), Vicerrector de Investigación e Innovación Tecnológica (2001-2002) y Director del Departamento de Tecnología Química y Ambiental (2002-2007). Su actividad docente se ha centrado en materias típicas de la Ingeniería Química, la Ingeniería Ambiental y de la Energía en diferentes titulaciones de grado, master y doctorado.
Ha participado en aproximadamente 60 proyectos de investigación financiados por entidades públicas y privadas, destacando el elevado número de colaboraciones que ha mantenido con el sector industrial. Es autor de 200 publicaciones en revistas científicas indexadas (Índice de Hirsch, h = 44). También es autor de más de 300 comunicaciones en congresos y reuniones científicas, de 5 patentes y de 4 libros. Hasta la fecha ha dirigido 22 Tesis Doctorales.
Ha sido miembro del Comité Ejecutivo de la red ACENET (ERANET de Investigación sobre Catálisis Aplicada) y del Círculo de Innovación sobre Tecnologías Medioambientales (CITME). Es miembro del Consejo Científico de CIESOL (Almería, España) y del Centro Alemán de Investigación sobre biomasa (Leipzig, Alemania), del Centro de I+D CERTH/CPERI (Tesalónica, Grecia), así como Presidente del Grupo Español de Zeolitas y miembro de la Junta de Gobierno de la Sociedad Española de Catálisis. Ha participado en el consejo científico de diferentes revistas y de varios congresos y reuniones científicas. En 2011 fue Presidente del Comité Organizador de la 6ª edición del “International Sypmposium on Feedstock Recycling of Plastics” (ISFR2011, Toledo, España), y en 2015 co-Chairman del HYdrogen POwer Theoretical and Engineering Solutions International Symposium 2015 (Hypothesis XI, Toledo, España).
José António Teixeira
José António Teixeira is currently Professor (“Professor Catedrático”) at Biological Engineering Department, University of Minho (since 2000). He has a degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Porto (1980) and a PhD in Chemical Engineering also from University of Porto (1988).
He has been involved in different management activities, being Head of the Department of Biological Engineering, Univ. Minho, 2000 -2012 and Head of Biological Engineering Research Centre, 2012-2015.
His main research interests are Industrial Biotechnology (bioprocess development for the transformation of lignocellulosic materials into 2nd generation bioethanol and chemicals; valorisation of agro-industrial residues; bioreactor development including new design bioreactors and continuous processing) and Food Biotechnology (non-conventional food processing; edible films for packaging; process development for production of prebiotics)
He was responsible/co-responsible for the Supervision of 31 PhD theses and 20 Post-docs and has been the coordinator of 32 scientific research projects, 7 of which international

Gregg T. Beckham is a Group Leader at NREL. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering at MIT in 2007.
He currently leads and works with an interdisciplinary team of biologists, chemists, and engineers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on conversion of biomass to fuels, chemicals, and materials including in metabolic engineering, fermentation, separations, catalysis, biopolymer and carbon fiber production, and lignin valorization.
Jeroen Hugenholtz is currently leading the Expertise Group “Microbial Cell Factories” at Wageningen Food & Biobased Research as is also part-time Professor in Industrial Microbiology at the University of Amsterdam. His main R&D responsibilities is to develop, in collaboration with industry, efficient and cost-effective fermentation processes for production of biobased bulk-chemicals, biofuels and specialty chemicals, which are mostly food ingredients.
Jeroen Hugenholtz obtained his PhD at the University of Groningen in 1986 and worked for 21 yrs at NIZO food research before joining Coca-Cola, in 2010, and later Corbion in 2013 as (food)fermentation expert.
JH’s major scientific interests are; (food) fermentation in general, physiology and metabolic engineering of fermentative bacteria and industrial microbiology/biotechnology. JH is author of over 180 scientific publications and 20 patents.
Carolina Grassi is a researcher in the Laboratory of Genomics and BioEnergy at State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Biological Science (2004) and a PhD in Genetics and Molecular Biology (2012) from UNICAMP. She has a Master of Business Administration degree in Business Management from IBMEC (2018). She has a career developed in research and innovation with focus on the production of biofuels and renewable chemicals from plant biomass. Over 8 years of experience in bioenergy businesses and in the development and management of scientific projects in biotechnology research with emphasis on sugarcane growth and production, genetic manipulation of microorganisms and development and optimization of bioprocesses. Until 2017 she has worked as a Researcher and associate coordinator of the Molecular and Agricultural Division at Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CTBE). She has also acted as a researcher in large companies, such as Braskem and GranBio, and as a scientific director in SGBio Renováveis (Joint venture between GranBio and Rhodia) where coordinated and developed several technologies in microbial and bioprocesses fields to produce first and second generation biochemicals and biofuels. She is author of important articles in biotechnology area and inventor of patent applications filled in several countries.
Ingvar Landälv has more than 35 year experience in gasification based process plants. He has served as CTO for Chemrec, responsible for the development of its black liquor gasification technology. 2013-2017 he was employed by Luleå University of Technology. Mr. Landälv is an innovator and leader in the science of thermochemical biomass conversion and has aided in shaping international bioenergy policy decisions. He has since its start been engaged in the European Biofuels Technology Platform which he is currently chairing. Recently, Mr. Landläv was awarded the 2017 Don Klass Award for Excellence in Thermochemical Conversion Science. This award recognizes Mr. Landälv as an innovator and leader whose career has advanced the science of thermochemical biomass conversion and aided in shaping international bioenergy policy decisions. He received the award on September 19 at the fifth biennial International Conference on Thermochemical Biomass Conversion Science (tcbiomass2017) in Chicago.
George Huber is the Harvey Spangler Professor of Chemical Engineering at University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focus is on developing new catalytic processes for the production of renewable liquid fuels and chemicals. He has received the Thomson Reuters highly cited researcher award, NSF CAREER award, the Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar award, and the AICHE Colburn award. He has been named one of the top 100 people in bioenergy by Biofuels Digest for the past 6 years. He is co-founder of Anellotech (www.anellotech.com) a company focused on commercializing a technology to produce renewable aromatics from biomass. In summer of 2015, George did a sabbatical visit with Professor Tao Zhang at Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics. George did a post-doctoral stay with Avelino Corma at the Technical Chemical Institute at the Polytechnical University of Valencia, Spain (UPV-CSIC). He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from University of Wisconsin-Madison (2005). He obtained his B.S. (1999) and M.S.(2000) degrees in Chemical Engineering from Brigham Young University.
Rafael Luque (Ph.D 2005 from Universidad de Cordoba, Spain) has extensively published (over 250 peer-reviewed publications) in the areas of (nano)materials science, heterogeneous (nano)catalysis, microwave and flow chemistry, biofuels and green chemical methods in synthetic organic chemistry, filed 3 patent applications and edited 8 books as well as numerous contributions to book chapters and invited, guest, keynote and plenary lectures in scientific events worldwide.
Prof. Luque is also member of the Editorial Board of prestigious journals including Chemical Society Reviews (RSC), Catalysis Communications (Elsevier) and Sustainable Chemical Processes (Chemistry Central) as well as Editor-in-Chief of the Porous section of the journal Materials and Series Editor of Topics in Current Chemistry (Springer). Among recent awards, Rafael has received the Marie Curie Prize from Instituto Andaluz de Quimica Fina in Spain (2011), the Green Talents award from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Germany (2011), the TR35 Spain from Technology Review and MIT as one of the top 10 young entrepreneurs in Spain (2012) and very recently the RSC Environment, Sustainability and Energy Early Career Award (2013) from the Royal Society of Chemistry UK, a Distinguished Engineering Fellowship and Visiting Professorship from CBME at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong and the Chinese Academy of Sciences at the State Key Laboratory of Electroanalytical Chemistry of the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry as well as Ciencia Sem Fronteiras Special Scientist of Universidade de Pelotas (Brazil).
Tarja Tamminen is a Principal Scientist at VTT Research Centre of Finland. She is working in the Biomass processing research area with special focus on biorefinery chemistry. With a PhD in organic chemistry her experience is mainly on traditional and emerging chemical wood processing technologies and valorisation of the side stream components, particularly lignin.
Eleni Iliopoulou holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, from Aristotle’s University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Greece. Her main research interests include:
Synthesis and compositional, structural, morphological and chemical characterization of catalysts for biomass valorisation processes to biofuels and bio-commodities and environmental technologies for the abatement of atmospheric pollutants.
Currently, Mercedes Ballesteros is Head of Biofuels Unit at CIEMAT and Head of Joint Research Unit CIEMAT-IMDEA Energy on Biotechnological processes. Dr. Ballesteros is PhD in Biology by the Autonomous University of Madrid and Master in Biotechnology by the Complutense University of Madrid. She has participated and leaded numerous R&D projects in collaboration with national and international research organizations and industries on biomass research, especially in the development of processes and technologies for lignocellulosic ethanol production and microalgae. She is author of more than 100 publications and participates regularly as an expert in national and international Committees. She is a member of the Spanish Society for Biotechnology (SEBIOT), member of the Latin-American Society for Biorefineries Development (SIADEB) and fellow of the Coordination Group in the Spanish Technology Platform (Bioplat).
Davinia Salvachúa is Staff Scientist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado (USA). Her research is focused on biological lignin depolymerization and catabolism as well as on lignin and sugar upgrading to chemicals and fuel precursors through fermentation development with diverse microorganisms. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Alcalá de Henares University in 2007 and her PhD in Biology from the Department of Microbiology at the Complutense University of Madrid in 2013 (Spain). Before becoming Staff Scientist at NREL, Davinia also worked as postdoctoral fellow at the Center of Biological Research (Madrid, Spain) and NREL.
Después de Los Cabos, Baja california (México) en 2012, Jaén (España) en 2013 y Concepción (Chile) en 2015, es el momento de organizar el probablemente más importante Congreso Iberoamericano sobre Biorrefinerías, ahora en su 4ª edición (4-CIAB), nuevamente en Jaén. Esperamos que los miembros de la SIADEB así como la totalidad de la comunidad científica iberoamericana de las biorrefinerías encuentre en este evento la oportunidad de adquirir nuevos conocimientos sobre los desarrollos que están sucediendo en este campo tanto en Europa como en América. Confío en que este 4-CIAB sea también una fructífera ocasión para el networking y espero encontrarlos a todos en Jaén en octubre de 2018.
